How Geothermal Heating Works
Like air conditioners and refrigerators, geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) rely on circulating fluid that absorbs and releases heat. The advantage of a GHP is the accessibility of the heat source. In most locations, the ground has a year-round temperature of 55 degrees just a few yards below the surface.
GHPs have two main components: the heat pump and the ground loops. Ground loops are a system of tubes that are buried underground or placed in a body of water. The fluid inside absorbs heat, which is transferred to your home through the heat pump. Ground loops can be buried horizontally or vertically. Heat pumps are typically installed in a basement or utility closet.

Though installation of a geothermal heat pump (GHP) is more expensive than a typical furnace, according to the US Department of Energy, GHPs can be 65% more efficient than traditional furnaces. Homeowners make up the installation cost in energy savings within 10 years, and then have years of savings to come over the lifespan of the unit.
The heat pump itself lasts about 25 years, as opposed to a furnace’s maximum lifespan of about 20 years, and ground loops can last up to 50 years. This makes geothermal heating a good long-term investment for your home.
GHPs make sense for many homeowners, but the size of your plot, your soil, and the ground or surface water on your land may mean certain styles of ground loop will work better for you.
